Working in Jersey

When registering with a recruitment agency it is essential that your status in relation to the Regulation of Undertakings & Development (Jersey) Law, 1973 is established. Under this law, an employer is required to endeavour to fill a vacancy with a locally qualified person (or an individual who has lived in Jersey for five consecutive years).

If the employer is unable to fill the vacancy, the employer would then be required to apply for a licence to enable them to employ a person who has been in the island for less than five years.

Citizens and nationals of a Member State of the European Economic Area do not need work permits in Jersey. Other exemptions include a Commonwealth Citizen coming to Jersey for a working holiday or having a UK born grandparent, but these people would have to obtain entry clearance before arriving in Jersey.

Further details can be found on the States of Jersey Government website www.gov.je.
